Building The Future

China's Grand Canal transforming a region into a nation
Water: A Lake in the Sahara?
A Presentation by Frank P. Davidson and Kathleen Lusk Brooke
With Ernst G. Frankel
In honor of United Nations World Water Day 2010, celebrated on March 22, 2010, the authors here introduce the first in a series of ideas that could improve, perhaps even change, the world. Having previously undertaken a study of 3,000 years of history seen through the greatest large-scale engineering, scientific, technical, and architectural achievements that changed the course of civilization (Building the World, 2006), we now endeavor to put such knowledge to work in service of the future. Standing, as it were, "on the shoulders of giants," can humanity see how current and past know-how might improve the future of the earth?
