Building The Future: Vactrains

WPI Researchers Ananya Tandon and Alihusain Sirohwala presenting their study

Transportation and energy are two closely linked factors critical to building the future. High speed train systems, while well developed in Japan and Europe presently, could change the landscape of the United States. China is currently exploring efficient train transport; South America and Africa could follow suit.

Therefore, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has launched an initiative studying the economics and feasibility of Vactrains. The initiative is sponsored by Dr. Frank Davidson, who pioneered the Channel Tunnel. Under the direction of Professors Oleg Pavlov and Khalid Saeed, three researchers, Ananya Tandon, BME '09, Raj Vysetty, ECE '08, and Alihusain Sirohiwala, ECE '09, presented their study of train transport utilizing tubes, thereby reducing resistance and increasing efficiency and speed.

As work progresses, an executive training program may be offered for engineers worldwide who are pursuing advanced work in transportation systems. WPI also offers an online graduate certificate in the field of System Dynamics. For more information, please visit http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Depts/SSPS/
